2008 CHAMPIONS

Carnegie Women’s Premier League Winners

Carnegie Women’s Reserve League Winners

Carnegie Women’s Premier League Cup Winners

Coca Cola IFA Women’s Cup Winners

The 2008 season has ended and what a season for Club Glentoran BU. They ended the season as undisputed champions of women’s football in Northern Ireland courtesy of winning the Carnegie Women’s Premier League, Coca Cola IFA Women’s Cup and the Carnegie Women’s Premier League Cup.

Not to be overshadowed by the 1sts, the reserves added a fourth piece of silverware to the trophy cabinet by winning the Carnegie Women’s Reserve League Cup.
The squad also competed in the Women’s UEFA Women’s Cup (Croatia)

Whilst the players have taken all the deserved plaudits in the past few weeks, the success of Glens BU is down to the work behind the scenes which ensures the players have as professional a set up as possible to prepare them for competition. The people concerned are too numerous to mention but to each and every person who has contributed in any way-- a big thank you from all at Glens BU.

Glens BU would take this opportunity to thank their sponsors, the Glentoran Board, Glentoran management, supporters of Glentoran FC and the TMen all of whom have been extremely supportive throughout the year.

Women's IFA Cup Final 19.9.08

Glentoran BU 4 Linfield Ladies 0

Following in the footsteps of their male counterparts who beat their cross town rivals Linfield 4-1, in a Setanta Cup Fixture earlier in the week, the Glens Women's recorded an emphatic victory over Linfield Ladies, running out convincing 4-0 winners in the IFA Women's Cup Final at Loughgall.

The Glens went in front after 11 minutes as Maggie Tolan slotted home a Nicky Ganter cross to lead 1-0. After 17 minutes Maggie Tolan doubled the lead with a brilliantly converted free kick from the left.

Half time was reached with no further score, Maggie Tolan in particular, scorning a chance just before half-time to get her hat trick and further stretch the Glens BU lead.
The 2nd half got off to an explosive start as Nolene Douglas the Glens BU left back was dismissed for an innocuous retort to her shirt being pulled as she tried to drive up-field.

This dismissal seems to give Linfield heart, but their rally was swiftly snuffed out as Glens BU reacted to a Linfield chance which rebounded of the post, by going up the field and scoring their 3rd goal via Nicky Ganter (player of the match).

The icing on the cake came courtesy of Rose Todd, who converted a well worked move to leave the final score 4-0.
Rose's celebrations summed up the exhilaration and satisfaction of a job well done, trophy number 4 and the end of a very satisfying season!!!!

Northern Ireland Women’s Premier Cup Final

Glentoran added a third piece of silverware to this season’s haul as they added the NI Women’s Premier League Cup to the already achieved Premier League title and the Reserve League title. The Cup was achieved by beating Newbridge Predators at Loughgall on Friday night (12th).

The match was a tense affair, with Glentoran BU trying to build on the momentum of the draw they had achieved in the Women’s UEFA Cup, from which they had returned from Croatia on Wednesday.

Indeed the Glens took the lead mid way through the 1st half as Catherine O’Hagan converted a well worked Glens move, running onto a pass from Laura Hislop.
The second half started with Newbridge Predators pressing for a equalizer which they got ten minutes into the half courtesy of a strike from Lisa Nixon.

This goal seem to galvanise the Glens out of their second half lethargy and they went in front again when impact substitute Nicky Ganter skipped inside the Predators defense and crossed for Gail Macklin to slot home.

Predators tried to get the equalizer to force the game into extra time but it wasn’t to be and the Glen’s successful season continues.

Dominic Walsh Chairman SNI, demonstrates SNI continuing support for local sport as he wishes the women form Glens BU every success as they prepare to compete in the Women's UEFA Cup, taking part in a mini tournament in Croatia from the 3rd-9th September where their opponents include the women's champions of Kazakhstan, Croatia and Romania.

The competition will force the Glens Women's team to raise their game but given that they have won the Northern Ireland Women's Premier League title for the last three years, this is a challenge they are looking forward to.

GBU do the League Double

Trophy image

For the third consecutive year the women from Glentoran BU first team were crowned as Premier League champions. The team played consistently good football throughout the season and this was reflected by this very talented team lifting the title with still one game in hand.

Not to be out done the reserve team women made it a double for the club by lifting the Reserve League title. Although the first number of games of the season did not start well for the reserves they stepped their play up in the latter end of the season and winning the league is just reward for the huge effort they gave.

Lyndsay does the Treble

June was certainly a month of celebrations for GBU player Lyndsay Corry.
Not only did Lyndsay celebrate her 21st birthday but she also celebrated 10 years at Glentoran Belfast United.

Lyndsay has come through the various stages at domestic level with GBU from starting off as a junior in 1998 to playing as a regular first team player.

In addition to her successful career at GBU, Lyndsay is also a very formidable player at International level, having represented her country at various levels throughout her football career.

To mark Lyndsay's contribution to the club, manager Cheryl Lamont handed her the prestigious Captain's armband. It was the icing on the cake as Lyndsay "did the treble" and captained her team to a very convincing win.

NIWFA Premier League Cup Final - 14th September 2007

Glentoran's Women lose out in Penalty Shootout

Glentoran women's team suffered defeat for the 1st time in almost two years as they were narrowly defeated by Newtownabbey Strikers in the NIWFA Premier League Cup Final losing a penalty shootout 9-8 on the 10th penalty.

IFA Cup Final - 21st September 2007

Glentoran Belfast United 2 - 1 Newtownabbey Strikers

Glentoran's women's team achieved the prestigious "Double" last night as they beat Newtownabbey Strikers 2-1 in the IFA Cup final at Taylor's Ave Carrickfergus, adding that trophy to the League title which they won two weeks ago.

The final was another closely contested affair between these old adversaries and Glentoran women were determined to put the disappointment of last week's sudden death penalty loss to Newtownabbey in the NIWFA Premier League Cup behind them and started the game at breakneck pace. Their reward came in the 35th minute when Catherine O'Hagan drew the Newtownabbey keeper out and coolly slotted the ball home.

The 2nd half saw a determined Newtownabbey side, claw their way back into the fixture with the equaliser in the 60th minute. That score seemed to galvanise the Glens team and they went close on a few occasions before Maire Claire McKerr sealed the victory with a thunderbolt strike in the 92nd minute from 30 yards out. There was no time for Newtownabbey to get back, cue celebrations and yet another successful season for the Glens women team.
Kelly Bailie (Captain) happily received the trophy from Raymond Kennedy IFA President.

Yet again in the 2007 season, we are simply the BEST women's football club in Northern Ireland, IFA Cup and Premier League Champions!!!!
